Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University has achieved a new national milestone on the international stage, as its hydrogen‑powered vehicle successfully passed more than 120 technical inspections on the first attempt. This accomplishment reflects the efficiency of young Saudi talents and their ability to innovate and compete globally. The achievement was realized through the University’s participation in the Shell Eco‑marathon 2026, held at the Lusail Circuit in the State of Qatar.
Represented by the College of Engineering, the University took part in this global marathon, which focuses on designing and developing ultra‑efficient, environmentally friendly vehicles. The University’s team competed in intensive technical challenges against leading universities from across Asia and the Middle East, offering a live demonstration of the professional and applied excellence achieved by Saudi higher education outputs in cutting‑edge sustainability technologies.
The College of Engineering successfully developed two vehicles to compete in the Internal Combustion Engine and Hydrogen categories. This achievement marked the first participation by an Arab university in 2026 with a hydrogen‑powered vehicle in the history of the competition. The internal combustion vehicle recorded an unprecedented level of fuel efficiency, earning first place among Middle Eastern universities, while the hydrogen vehicle demonstrated outstanding engineering performance by passing all rigorous technical inspections from the first round—an achievement that embodies the Kingdom’s leadership in adopting clean energy solutions.
The Shell Eco‑marathon is a global academic program that brings together top engineering minds to design and build vehicles competing across three energy categories: electric, hydrogen fuel cells, and internal combustion engines. The program aims to inspire students to develop innovative solutions to global energy challenges and to strengthen the capabilities of the next generation of innovators.
